Who am I?
Hello and welcome to Charlotte’s Threads! My name is Emily and I am the chief knitter and crocheter. My crafting story is a little different than most. A little over two years ago in 2019 I was having yet another surgery and wanted something to do while recovering. My sister had been teaching herself to knit and offered to help me get started. I started on a basic knit shawl thinking it would take me WEEKS to finish. I completed that first shawl in 10 days and I was hooked. That was a little over two years ago and I have not stopped since. I learned how to knit first and then during the pandemic my sister helped me discover crocheting which opened a whole new world of crafting.
I had finished college with a degree in art history but soon after I graduated I was diagnosed with something called FND as well as fibromyalgia. This meant that my dreams of working in a museum were no longer possible. However, I discovered that even on the days where I was stuck in bed and unable to tolerate much, I could still knit and crochet and what’s more, it helped my hands! As an added bonus, a knitting or crochet project is a great way to pass the time in the endless doctor and physical therapy visits I have each week for my chronic illnesses.
I also discovered somewhat by accident that I was rather good at creating these pieces of wearable art. When I decided to put feelers out to see if anyone was interested in custom pieces the response was a resounding yes! I’ve learned a lot over the past two years and am continually learning new skills and patterns. I love seeing a pile of yarn sitting there and knowing in just a little while it will become something beautiful and useful.
When I’m not working on projects I love to bake and cook for my family. You can also see me out and about with my service dog Linus. Come along on this crafting journey with me as I learn, grow, and make stuff!
Emily
